Truck driving is a high-risk profession where being safety conscious is vital to survival, so performing regular inspections on your Hino truck should come as second nature to you.

With stopping being the most important basic function in terms of safety on any automobile, conducting regular brake inspections on your truck should be a top priority on your preventative maintenance list, if it already isn’t.

The brake system is an important part of your vehicle because it helps you stay in control while on the road, allowing you to slow down, make turns safely and of course stop whenever necessary.

By taking the time to pay close attention to your brakes and making sure they are in safe working condition, you can avoid potential accidents and maintain better control under a variety of driving conditions.

The following is an example of the list of main brake components on the HINO 700 Series that Hino Canada recommends getting replaced at the time of regular inspections, along with the potential problems that could arise if they're not replaced or maintained properly:

  • Brake hoses
Brake hoses are used to transmit pressure from the brake fluid reservoir to the brake calipers. Cracked or crimped hoses can lead to air or oil leaks and brake failure, so becoming proficient in testing your brake hoses is a handy skill to have.
*Should be replaced every 24 months.

  • Brake chamber diaphragm
The brake chamber diaphragm sends compressed air to the piston in the chamber to activate the brake. Over time the internal rubber parts will degrade due to stretching and compression, which in turn can lead to faulty brake performance.
*Should be replaced every 24 months.

  • Rubber parts used in brake air valves
These are used to regulate braking force by sending or stopping compressed air intermittently in response to brake pedal motion.
Over time the rubber parts will degrade due to repetitive vibrations, stretching and compression, which can lead to causing problems in the brake system with the seizing of valves and air leaks.
*Should be replaced every 24 months.

  • Expander
The expander is what activates the brake shoe to produce braking force, and over time it will degrade due to grease and wear to its rubber parts, eventually
    leading to brake failure.
*Should be replaced every 60,000 km.

  • Air drier desiccant
The air drier desiccant works to ensure that the air feed is free of oil or moisture. Moisture can enter brake components if the desiccant’s performance is compromised by adhered oil or other causes, and this can in turn result in corrosion and degradation of different parts, ultimately leading to failure of the entire air system.
*Should be replaced every 60,000 km or 12 months.

Refer to the Owner's Manual of your vehicle as guidance for all the main points to check on your brake system during regular inspections or contact your local Hino dealership for any maintenance related questions you may have.
